Prohibition of discrimination and equal treatment in Finland

The employer shall treat the employees equally. The employer may not, during the employment relationship or when recruiting, treat employees differently unless there is an acceptable reason for the different treatment. Discrimination based on such as gender, age, ethnic origin, religion, political activities etc. is banned.

The so-called Equality Act prohibits discrimination based on gender; in other words women and men shall be treated equally in similar and comparable situations.  Persons subjected to or suspecting discrimination prohibited in the Equality Act can contact the Ombudsman for Equality for guidance and advice in the matter, phone (09) 1607 3248 or e-mail tasa-arvo@stm.fi.

If you believe that you have been discriminated against in recruitment or at the workplace, you can contact your own trade union or the Occupational Safety and Health Authorities for advice.
